former sailor Albert Beaumont is hoping Guardian readers might be able to help him get back in touch with his former Navy pal Brian Morton.
Albert, of Cleckheaton, has this photograph of the two of them taken while they were in Singapore in 1956.
“The photograph was taken in Terror Barracks in Singapore,” said Albert, who served in the Navy for eight years.
“I signed up as a volunteer. I remember being in the Silver Lady cafe in Cleckheaton with my cousin and I just said: ‘I’ve had enough of this, I’m off to Leeds to sign up!’ So I did! It was at the time of national service and when my papers came my mum thought they’d just come early. She didn’t know for two years that I’d actually volunteered.
“Brian came from Woodlands in Oakenshaw, and we went to school together and were in the Navy together. But after the picture was taken we went on different ships, me on HMS Newcastle and him on HMS Opossum.
“I’ve often wondered what happened to him.”
Anyone with information can contact Albert at 4 Taylor Street, Cleckheaton, BD19 5DZ.
