THIS week’s Looking Back takes us to Heckmondwike in the 1930s.
Kathy Cass of Littletown has sent us two wonderful pictures which belong to her mother, Eileen Sheard.
Eileen, nee Cooper, is 86 and has lived in Heckmondwike all her life.
“The first is a class photo, which we think was taken at Battye Street school around 1930/31,” said Kathy.
“Mum has managed to identify the following; back row, left to right: Frank Walker, ?, Frank Exley, ? Schofield, Arthur Davis, ?, ? Downton, Kenneth Damiani.
“Middle row: Stanley Beevers, ?, ? Blackburn, Lucy Widdop, Margaret Richardson, Norman Spreadbury, ? Pine, ?, ?.
“Front row: ?, Marjorie Sheard, Marjorie Swan, ? Clough, Muriel Senior, Eileen Cooper, ?, Jean Patchett.
“Seated on the ground are, Percy Lockwood and Stanley Dawson.”
Battye Street closed as a school in the 1990s and is now used as the Khandaani Dhek Bhal/Barnardo’s Centre.
The second photo, taken at Heckmondwike swimming baths in the late 1930s shows the following:
Back row, left to right: Connie ?, ?, Mary Wilson, Ralph Richter, Edwin Schofield, Joan Heap, Stanley Beevers, Rosemary McCann.
Middle row, left to right: ?, ?, ? Crowther, Eileen Cooper, ?, Annie Bates, ? Godfrey, ?, ?.
Front row: ?, ? Wilson, ?, ? Rouse, Brian ?, ?, ? Godfrey, Brian Brearley, ? Bates.”
“My mother doesn’t remember the names of the teachers and has done her best with the children’s names but of course it was a long time ago!” added Kathy.
We’ve also found another picture of swimmers at a baths in Spen, but sadly there is no information to say whether it is the baths at Tofts Road in Cleckheaton, or Heckmondwike baths. Do any readers know?
