Vehicles are on the road to success

MUCH has been written in recent Looking Back articles about the building of the M62 in the 1970s.

The Guardian charted the progress of the new motorway as it was being built.

This photograph was taken as the first part of the Chain Bar intersection to be opened to traffic was brought into use.

The intersection diverted traffic using the A58 Whitehall Road, round about three quarters of a mile of the rotary section of the interchange. While Leeds and Halifax traffic used the new stretch of road, contractors engaged on the huge Chain Bar project carried out work on the old stretch of the A58.

The picture was taken from a section of the flyover under construction and shows part of the new road section approaching the junction with Bradford Road.
