The Friends of West End Park, in Cleckheaton, are upset that grass at the space has been left to grow in two areas.

After asking a Kirklees Council mower why it had happened, chairman Martin Wesbter was shown a pamphlet which said trials are taking place until the end of June. This means unused areas of open space would not be cut in order to save money and assess the effects.

Mr Webster, of Mount View Court, said: “It’s like we’ve had a visit from a drunken crop circle maker. I could have saved the bean-counters the cost of this trial. I can tell them now that without being mowed the grass will grow, look awful and convince visitors that Cleckheaton is not a good place to live or bring their business.”

He said that the Friends group were not consulted. “The time spent moving between parks is much greater than the time spent in them,” he added.

A council spokesman said: “Making operational changes to our maintenance schedules means we can continue to offer a quality service which recognises the spaces that are most important to our residents, at a cost the council can afford.” Email [email protected] to give feedback.
