Are you tough enough to compete in the World Coal Carrying Championship?

The 52nd World Coal Carrying Championships will take place on Easter Monday.

Entries are now open for men, women and children to take part in the world-famous race, which was first held in 1963.

Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the streets of Gawthorpe to watch coal carriers run three-quarters of a mile through the village with sacks on their back.

Men carry 50kg of coal and women 20kg in weight and their aim is to get the fastest time possible.

The event is on Easter Monday, April 6 from 10am. There will be separate races for men, women and children.

It starts from Owl Lane, outside the Royal Oak and finishes at the village green where the Maypole is situated.

Adults can register on the day at the Boot and Shoe Pub, Gawthorpe from 10am.

The children’s fun run registration on the day is at the Darby and Joan Club, from 9am.
