Arsonists torched the former Batley Working Men’s Club which left the building gutted.
Firefighters tackled the blaze at the club on Wellington Street at around 1.15pm on Thursday.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said vandals gained entry into the building and set the furnishings alight.
The blaze caused extensive internal and structural damage to the club.
It is believed the fire was started by a naked flame.
The working men’s club closed shortly after Christmas last year.
Det Con Sarah Umpherville, of Kirklees District CID, said: “The fire has caused extensive internal and structural damage to the club.
“Initial enquiries by the fire service suggest the fire has started after a naked flame was used to set light to furnishings inside.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who has seen anyone entering or leaving the premises or acting suspiciously in the vicinity.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who has information about who may be responsible for this incident.”
Anyone with information should call Kirklees CID on 101.
