Asda in Dewsbury launches new charity scheme

Asda’s Chosen By You, Given By Us scheme gives shoppers chance to decide where the company donates cash.

Store community life champion Sharon Kingswood said: “Whether you just buy a chocolate bar or do your weekly shop it doesn’t matter, you’ll get a token. Then you can choose one of the three local causes to give your support to.”

Shoppers can place their green token into a box to back their chosen charity. Chosen By You, Given By Us kicked off this week with a special opening event attended by the Mayor of Kirklees Coun Eric Firth, pupils from Earlsheaton Technology College, and local community support officers.

The three local causes to choose from over the next 12 weeks are Earlsheaton Technology College, Eastborough Junior Infant and Nursery School and the Mayor of Kirklee’s chosen charity, the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. All three are guaranteed to be given at least £50 from the supermarket, but the cause with the most tokens will receive £200.

Mayor of Kirklees Coun Eric Firth, who officially opened the scheme, said: “The scheme is an absolutely fantastic idea, and they’re all very deserving causes. One of them is my charity so of course I’d like it to get the £200 but all three causes are very dear to me so I would encourage everyone to get involved.”

Linda Crayton, Community development worker at Earlsheaton Technology College said: “Obviously we’re hoping to be successful but we know we’re up against some really strong competition.

“But as long as it goes to a good cause it doesn’t really matter, plus they’re all causes that benefit local children which is brilliant!”

The next three choices will announced in 12 weeks.
