Athletes inspire kids

Three athletes visited a supermarket to spur children into sport.

Matthew Johnson joined sisters Amy and Katy Marchant at Asda to speak about their experiences competing as elite athletes and the benefits of keeping active.

Matthew, 16, is a swimmer who has recorded 200m times that were faster than those US swimming star Michael Phelps was achieving at a similar age.

He recently returned from the European Youth Olympic Festival in Turkey with four gold and two silver medals.

Amy, 19, and Katy, 18, have competed for the Great Britain NI junior combined events team –it was the first time sisters had represented on the same team in the same discipline.

The girls’ team took gold at the National Championships.

The visit to the store in Mill Streety West, Dewsbury, was to celebrate the Asda Athletes Programme, which supports local aspiring athletes with help from the charity SportsAid.
