Aussie RL star pops back to his hometown

There were some surprised smiles on faces at Castle Hall Academy yesterday morning when a Rugby League ace - and former pupil - dropped into school.

Dewsbury-born Thomas ‘Tom’ Burgess is back in his hometown and decided to pay his old school a visit.

Dan Smith from the Academy said: “Tom and his twin-brother George always call into school when they are back home, which is brilliant for the kids.

“It’s such a big deal for them - especially those who play rugby as it shows them just what can be achieved.”

Tom, who spent time in his rugby career playing for Dewsbury Rams, now plays for the South Sydney Rabbitohs of the National Rugby League alongside twin-brother George and brother Sam, who is back with the Aussie side after a spell playing rugby union. Fourth brother Luke is also in Australia playing for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles .

In a Tweet to the school after his visit, Tom said: “Had a little walk down memory lane today at my high school. Always great to see everyone.”

He later told the school: “Good to see you. Awesome to see the kids.”
