A team at Batley Fire Station in Carlinghow Lane manned the hoses at a charity car wash on Saturday, to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and the Micro and Anophthalmic Children’s Society (MACS), collecting £280.

Barclays staff also grabbed buckets and sponges to lend a hand, and matched the money raised on the day, making the grand total £580.

Firefighter Darrell Hird said: “It went really well. We even had some people that didn’t want their cars washed but they donated anyway.”

Darrell and his wife Sarah are also running the London Marathon next month to raise more cash for the charities. We’ve got five weeks left to train,” he added. “We’re a little bit nervous but hopefully we’ve put the work in.”
