Carlinghow Junior School, in Ealand Road, was described as Good overall (grade two) after its lastest inspection.

The regulators noted improvements were made since new head Lyndsay Gallagher started nearly two years ago. They said she “relentlessly focussed on raising achievement and the quality of teaching.”

It marks a positive change after the last report in November 2012, which said the school Requires Improvement (grade three).

The new report noted pupils’ enthusiasm because of the “vibrant” and “varied” environment. Mrs Gallagher said an example of this is Forest School, where pupils do activities in woodland that are connected to their curriculum. She added that staff now tailor learning to each pupil.

Inspectors also said: “The leadership and management of the provision for disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs is outstanding and a strength.”

Mrs Gallagher, 52, of Huddersfield, said: “The staff have done a lot of team building and team work. Everyone has had a part to play.

“The school would not have improved and got those grades if everybody didn’t pull together. There are many who have gone over and beyond what we expected.”

A school statement said they will now “move towards being outstanding in all areas and we will be working hard in the future.”
