Bike pair saddle up in memory of dear friend

Dave Shelton, 69, of Dewsbury, and Dave Cowgill, 73, of Kirkheaton, completed the mammoth ride on October 25, raising £1,031.21 for the Dalton-based hospice.

Their friend Olive Breary died from cancer aged 76.

It was a big challenge for the cycling veterans, but one which they were determined to complete. “It was tough going, especially with the 4am start,” said Mr Shelton. “It was cold and dark when we set out, but by the time we made it to Bawtree it flattened out, which made the ride in to Skegness a little easier.”

Paying a visit to the hospice to hand over the cheque this week, the two Daves were keen to speak about their friend Olive.

Mr Cowgill said: “She was such a kind person. She would do anything for anyone.”

The pair plan to run the Barnsley 10K in memory of their friend, who was due to run it before she died.

Kirkwood fundraising manager Marie Peacock was delighted with their efforts. She said: “It’s an absolutely wonderful achievement and a lovely way to remember their friend Olive. I think they were surprised by just how much they managed to raise.

“The support of local people like the two Daves makes a massive difference to the care we can provide here at Kirkwood and we are extremely grateful to them.”
