A much loved Heckmondwike woman welcomed 120 friends and family members from across the globe for a three-day birthday extravaganza.

Relatives and friends of Audrey Rhodes gathered last weekend to mark her 90th birthday, flying in from as far as Canada and Croatia.

Audrey’s daughter Glenys Kellett said: “On her birthday on Friday, more than 120 gathered for a good old Yorkshire party, 100 of which were family! Four generations were there, some travelling from as far away as Canada, Croatia, Ireland, and the four corners of Britain.

“On Saturday her immediate family of 26 had a special dinner, and following the Sunday church service, her family provided refreshments for 60 friends.

“While reaching 90 has become less of an unusual event, I do believe that my mum is extraordinary. She is very happy, lively and independent and has lived in Heckmondwike all her life.

“She has always been the rock of her clan, helping all her family over the years. She still knows how to enjoy herself and is often one of the first on the dance floor at any family gathering or when on holiday.

“Always with a cheerful smile, she is up-to-date with current affairs locally and nationally. When not out and about, she is busy creating cross stitch scenes or knitting for the family.

“She has recently produced several hand-knitted nativity pieces and was creating much envied Christmas jumpers long before they became the must have accessory this year! She is a very special lady who, despite many hardships and setbacks in life, embraces the world with enthusiasm and radiates love and affection to all she meets.”
