The Hanging Heaton soldier was at Dewsbury Empire when it was announced on a screen that all reservists should report to their depots.

By 10pm that evening, he was on the train to Chatham and later deployed to France.

Pte Thompson was killed aged 28 in September 1914, after his regiment suffered serious losses as they drove the Germans back in the 1st Battle of the Marne.

Pte Cleasby, also of Hanging Heaton, served in the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment and died aged 26.

He was reported missing after the Battle of Mons.
