BREAKING NEWS: Dozens of plaques stolen from Mirfield church grounds

ALMOST 170 memorial plaques have been stolen from the grounds of a church.

The plaques were taken overnight on Friday and found missing on Saturday morning.

It is believed that only the oldest plaques were taken, as they are made of a purer, more valuable metal.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon and released on bail. A 37-year-old man was arrested today and remains in police custody.

The plaques were taken from St Mary’s Church in Mirfield.

Barry Dews from Mirfield Team Parish said: “Whoever did this is the lowest of the low.”

Insp Jenny Thompson added: “The theft of metal is a serious crime wherever it happens, but this theft of so many memorial plaques is a particularly despicable crime.”
