Armed robbers stole a cash box in an incident outside the Co-op in Scholes yesterday afternoon.

As we went to press, the Spen Valley NPT revealed the incident took place just after 2pm outside the store, in Westfield Lane.

Three men – thought to be armed but not with guns – attacked a security guard and stole a cash box. It is not yet known whether the box contained any money.

The offenders are then believed to have made off in a car which was found abandoned and burned out a short distance away.

One eyewitness said there were between 10-12 police at the scene, along with an ambulance.

Readers on our Facebook page said the secure money van was also still at the scene when the police arrived.
