Brothers cycle 1,000 miles in memory of dad

Craig and Ryan Smith completed the epic bike ride last month in memory of their father Philip, who died last year aged 58 from bowel cancer.

Mr Smith, who lived at Ravenshouse Road, Scout Hill and worked at BBA in Cleckheaton, was a keen sportsman and had played for various local football teams, including Wheelright Old Boys.

The brothers are just short of their target to raise £1,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support, and hope that former colleagues and friends of their father will help them reach it.

Craig, 28, said: “This is the first big fundriaser I have done, but Ryan has already taken part in events this year. We’re both attempting the Great North Run next Sunday.

“It was difficult - especially those first five miles every day, but knowing it was for such a great cause spurred us on. When dad was diagnosed in August 23011, his biggest fear was that he might die in hospital, but with the help of MacMillan nurses, he was able to spend his last days at home.

“Our online donation page has raised £680 and we raised around £300 in cash on the ride, so we’re hoping to get a few more sponsors to help us reach our target.”
