The culinary secrets of a Dewsbury entrepreneur’s family are shared in her first cookery book.

Prett Tejura, founder of Curry Cuisine, which is based in Savile Town, has released her debut cookery book Family Secrets, which is full of diverse and simple dishes inspired by much-loved family recipe.

Curry Cuisine, which makes a range of spice mixes, chutneys and pickles from Bretton Street Enterprise Centre, was originally set up as a cookery school in 2007 before diversifying into manufacturing for retail.

The book is a celebration of Prett’s family recipes collected for more than a decade, mixed with newly created dishes inspired by travels around India.

It gives an insight into spice blending with a simple spice guide and an introduction to easy-to-follow, traditional Indian dishes from a basic masala sauce to creamy dhals, as well as regional favourites such as Keralan fish.

A mix of old and new celebration dishes are included such as Tingy Tangy black chickpeas traditionally served at Indian weddings and recipes for special occasions.

Prett said: “It was my mother who inspired me to cook. Ours was a traditional household. I am the fourth child of five siblings and everyone was expected to carry out chores and help around the house.

“My mother was always busy in the kitchen and with a view that no-one was too young to help.

“My earliest memories are of peeling the skin off garlic cloves and ginger and to this day I only need to smell a hint of either of these two distinctive flavours to bring a smile to my face as happy family memories come flooding back.

“I hope my new book will motivate families to cook together, just as I do and share the joys and spice smells of real Indian food.”
