Call for enforcement action against new Thornhill store

Coun Khizar Iqbal (Con, Dews South) said work had been carried out at the One Stop store on Edge Top Road before planning permission had been given.

“This is a very contentious application and the work that has taken place is an unauthorised development,” said Coun Iqbal.

Planning applications for the replacement of an existing cash machine and plant installation works, illuminated and non-illuminated signs and for the installation of a replacement shop front have still to be decided by Kirklees Council’s planning committee.

An application for the extension of opening hours to 6am to 11pm is to be determined by the council’s licensing panel today, following a site visit to the premises.

Coun Iqbal said: “This is not a small shop anymore, it has been extended by 300 to 400 per cent and is now like a superstore. People are very concerned about the late opening hours.

“This is a very serious situation that sets a precedent if it is allowed to go ahead. Work has been done before planning applications have been determined.

“It does not matter who the applicant is, planning laws should be applied fairly and consistently to everyone. I have made a strong case with the planning department and am calling for enforcement action to be taken.”

Mark Redfearn, who lives next door to the store, said the proposed opening times were excessive so close to residential properties.

“Who wants to live next door to a supermarket that’s open until 11 at night,” said Mr Redfearn.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “The council is investigating this issue.”

No-one from the company was available for comment.
