CAMRA beer guide award handed to pub

A landlady had reason to raise a toast when CAMRA dished out a special award to her pub for being placed in its Good Beer Guide for a whopping tenth consecutive year.

The Black Bull, on Halifax Road, Liversedge, received the certificate from the Campaign forReal Ale’s Heavy Woollen chairman Andy Kassube.

The accolade is only issued to pubs that, year-on-year, serve and keep their beer to an excellent standard.

Landlady Linda Rowley, 61, said: “It’s quite an achievement. I haven’t worked for the pub for 10 years myself so it was a bit of a shock.

“What we do works and it has obviously worked for other people as well.

“I would like to thank my customers for coming in and the staff for being themselves.”

Linda added that the support of and quality ale provided by Ossett Brewery, who opened the Halifax Road boozer before any of their others in 2003, is key to the success.

Punters’ favourite ales include Pale Gold, Silver King, Yorkshire Blonde and Excelsior.

Since 2003, Ossett Brewery has expanded to 24 sites around Yorkshire, including the award-winning Rat and Ratchet in Huddersfield.

* Bustling,sun-drenched beer gardens, a catch-up with old pals – even a gloriously ill-advised chomp on some pork scratchings.

Everyone has a reason for loving their local.

The Spenborough Guardian wants readers to tell us what their favourite pub in the area is, and what makes it that little bit better than the rest.

Is it the great gourmet grub, smooth hand-pulled ale, cosy atmosphere or simply a good place to get away from it all?

Cheers m’dears!
