Car caught fire in Dewsbury after hitting bollard

A car caught fire after crashing into a bollard in Dewsbury this morning (Thursday).

Police were called to Moorlands Road at 7.50am when a black Ford Fiesta set alight.

They said the driver had continued to travel with the bollard underneath the vehicle before coming to a standstill.

Dewsbury firefighters were called by police and arrived just after 7.50am to put out the fire.

Police said witnesses at the scene saw three teenage boys running away from the car.

Sgt Stephen Forrest, from Dewsbury Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Investigations are currently underway as to how this car came to be on fire.

“The car came to a stop in a residential area and the fire extinguished quickly.”

He said the car was believed to have been bought and changed owners recently.

“At all times the safety of people in the local vicinity was of primary concern,” he said.

The boys are all thought to be white, aged between 17 and 18 years old, 5ft 4ins tall and of slim build. One man had shaved hair.

One was seen wearing a red jumper, one a grey jumper and the third a white sweater.
