The town is one of 13 neighbourhoods in the region to share in 373,330 from the government's Connecting Communities programme.

Connecting Communities supports traditional working class areas of the country that have been worst hit by the recession.

The scheme aims to ensure that residents are given a bigger say on local concerns, given training to help them represent their communities and to tackle issues.

A council spokesman said: "The funding will be used to build on our work in communities, for example supporting projects which bring people together and encourage them to get involved in their community. It will also be used to help people work with local services to meet their needs and to celebrate the positive work taking place in their areas."
