Charity gala for child cancer cause

A gala to raise money for a Yorkshire children’s cancer charity will take place this weekend.

The gala, which is being hosted by Ossett Town Football Club this Sunday at 10.30am, has been organised by friends of eight year-old Ella Rigg, who was diagnosed with neuroblastama - a rare and aggressive childhood cancer - at the end of last year. Money raised from the event will go to the Candlelighters charity.

An U9’s football tournament will be one of the day’s highlights, with Dewsbury Rangers playing in a specially designed ‘Candlelighters’ pink kit.

Alex Thompson, who is helping to organise the event, said: “Candlelighters has done so much for Ella and her family, and it does a lot for so many other people so we decided it would be good to raise money and give something back.”

Following the matches one brave lady, Mel Jones, will have her head shaved for the cause in the club’s bar. Raffle tickets will be available throughout the day with a variety of sporting prizes on offer, including tickets to see England play at Wembley.
