Charity shop cap would cost us thousands – Kirkwood

That’s according to Kirkwood Hospice, which has this week reacted to news that retail guru Mary Portas is to recommend a cap in charity shops in her High Street Review to government, due next month.

Portas made the suggestion to MPs on the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Town Centres.

Retail co-ordinator for Kirkwood Hospice Susan Marsden said the income from the Hospice’s charity shops made up a third of its total funds. Without that money, around £1.5m, the service would have reconsider what it offered.

“Obviously we are there to raise funds to make sure our patients have access to the services they need, and people probably wouldn’t travel out of town to drop off their donations,” she said. “The Batleys, Dewsburys and Cleckheatons of this world are raising money towards the £11,500 a day is costs to keep us going.”
