Cleckheaton businessman sleeps rough for chairity

A Cleckheaton businessman will rid himself of daily comforts and sleep rough for one night in aid of the homeless.

Andy Howarth, 61, chairman of Howarths People and Safety Management, will set his head down on the streets of Leeds, along with about 40 others, on Thursday September 25 for Simon on the Streets.

The charity gives support to homeless people with complex needs who cannot access other services.

Through 73 donations, Andy has so far raised £2,186.86 – almost £700 more than his goal.

Andy said: “I think it’s time that I’d like to give something back. I come from quite a poor background and homelessness is something that has been uppermost in my mind.

“I always feel really sorry for people on the streets, it’s not important to me why they are there.”

Andy was inspired to take action after turning his head away too often from homeless people asking for money.

“It’s too easy for some people just to give money. It’s much more of a sacrifice for me to go out on the streets. There has to be some pain in it for it to mean something.”

It is hoped the challenge raises £20,000. Donate at www.justgiving.com/andy-howarth1/.
