Cleckheaton set to host British Crown Green final

Cleckheaton Sports Club will host the British Crown Green Bowling Senior Individual Merit Final for the fourth time on Saturday when it is Yorkshire’s turn to take up the reins of the contest, which tours the counties each year.

Sixty-four of the sport’s finest crop will compete to become national champion on the Moorend club’s green for the first time since 1991.

The winner receives a cheque for £1,500.

Chairman of the club John Barraclough said: “Coach-loads of people are coming from all over the place. Yorkshire invariably gets more people and with the weather, we envision that there will be around 2,000.

“If the FA Cup Final is the major knock-out for football, this is the final for Crown Green Bowling - there’s nothing bigger. It’s the crème de la crème, there’s no question at all.”

The town’s pubs, such as the Wickham Arms on St Peg Lane, have reported full-capacity bookings and John thinks the town will have a great trading weekend.

Entrance is £10, with an addtional £10 charge to sit in the stand on the main green. It will start around 10am, with the final commencing at about 6.30pm. Food and drink are available all day but must not be taken into the grounds.

A ‘tented village’ has also been created for guests and free off-road car parking is available around the event - stewards will be on hand to guide drivers.
