Communities getting ready for charity walk along riverbank

Online registration for this year’s Rotary Navigation Walk closes at 9am on Wednesday, April 3, ahead of the event itself on Sunday April 7.

People who want to take part can still register on the day at any one of the walk’s seven start/finish points.

If they feel up to it, they can walk the whole 20-miles, or else any stretch between two of the start/finish points.

The start/finish points are: The Wharf, Sowerby Bridge; The Barge and Barrel, Elland; Bethel Street car park, Brighouse; The Navigation Tavern, Mirfield; Ponderosa, Heckmondwike; Tesco car park , Cleckheaton; and The Navigation Inn, Horbury.

Money raised will go to Overgate Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Wakefield Hospice and the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice.

Last year the event raised £18,000 and this year walkers are charged a registration fee of £6, or £1 for children.

The walk is the brainchild of Rotary Clubs across West Yorkshire including the Dewsbury, Mirfield, Batley, Birstall Luddites, Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike branches.

Organiser Bill Sutton said: “The walk is a healthy and safe way to put something into helping the hospices and has had major benefits in building closer co-operation between Rotary Clubs across the south west of West Yorkshire.”
