Community leaders in Heckmondwike have a few tricks up their sleeves to brighten up the town throughout the year.

Heckmondwike Alliance chairman Simon Thirkill is looking for help to set up a 1940s-themed day in October.

Taking inspiration from Batley’s successful vintage day, Simon believes Heckmondwike can pull it off as well and is looking for anyone with marketing or organising skills who can help get the idea off the ground.

And he said the alliance was working with Kirklees arts group Creative Scene on something special for this year’s Christmas lights.

The group is in the process of picking a spot for a new information board and will apply for funding to print pedestrian maps to post through letterboxes in an attempt to bring people into town.

And the bus hub is finally on the verge of completion.

Simon said: “There’s a great feeling it will benefit the town. And credit to everyone who’s worked on it.”

A council spokeswoman said: “The work at Heckmondwike transport hub is expected to be completed on schedule and within budget by the end of March. The hub will become fully operational on April 25 – the date was selected to coincide with the next West Yorkshire wide bus timetable change date. The period between the end of construction and it becoming operational also allows time for the new traffic signals to be fine-tuned, with input from the bus companies.”
