“BLINKERED” – that was the verdict on council plans to widen Spen’s busiest road in order to accommodate an extra 3,000 cars that could be generated from a 50 hectare industrial site near Hartshead.
Kirklees Council officers revealed at a packed public meeting that they would look at “opening up” the A62 which runs through the heart of the Spen Valley – just over 10 years since it was narrowed.
Transport manager for Kirklees Richard Hadfield told the Spen Valley Town and Valley Committee on Tuesday that the council was looking for places in the area that would deliver 35,000 jobs for Kirklees as part of the Local Development Framework (LDF).
He said the fields behind the Three Nuns pub were being considered along with an area between Cleckheaton and Heckmondwike.
If the plans are given the green light, 50 hectares of the open space – the equivalent of 50 football pitches – could be filled with industrial units.
