Countdown to Christmas starts with switch-on

The countdown to Christmas officially begins on Saturday when Paul Foster from Pulse Radio and a host of special guests, including Santa, will be flicking the switch in the market place.

There will be fun for all the family from 2pm, with music, games and live performances from the Pulse Radio roadshow and Batley country music singer Jade Helliwell.

Youngsters will be kept entertained by fairground rides, donkey rides, street entertainment and face painting.

Children can chill out in the giant snow globe before warming up watching the stunning fire and water fountain by pa-BOOM, on display thanks to support from Creative Scene and the Arts Council.

The event will end with a firework finale following the switch on at 6pm. It is being run by Kirklees Council in partnership with Batley Business Association and is sponsored by Fox’s Biscuits.

The full schedule is as follows: event start – Pulse playing music, games, 2pm; donkeys rides start, 2.30pm; Santa arrives to sit in his grotto, £2 admission, 3pm; fire/water sculpture lit, 3.30pm; Pulse Radio show starts, 4pm; the Rev Dr Martin Naylor to deliver Christmas message, 5.30pm; Jade Helliwell performs on stage, 5.40pm; Dr Martin Naylor, Jade Helliwell, Santa Clause and MP Mike Wood, the Mayor and Mayoress come on stage, 5.55pm; Jade Helliwell and others above switch on lights; Fireworks display, 6pm; Pulse show continues till 7pm.
