Craig appeal tops £16k
THE family of a man battling cancer of the liver and pancreas is ‘overwhelmed’ after well-wishers raised more than £16,000.
Craig Hudson, 41, was diagnosed with the disease last month and is undergoing alternative therapy at a Southampton clinic. His wife Erica has described the ‘amazing response’ by Spen folk to her husband’s plight.
At a fundraising event at the Ritz Ballroom, in Brighouse, on Saturday, a raffle, auction and silent auction helped raise a staggering £10,000.
“We’ve been told that it was like someone picked up the whole of Cleckheaton and popped it into the ballroom,” Erica said.
“It was just amazing.
“We want to say a huge thanks to everyone who came along and to the businesses that donated prizes for the night.
“Everyone has been sending us messages saying how much they enjoyed the night and how well organised it was.”
“Craig was feeling unwell so we couldn’t make it on the night. We were disappointed but the response has been incredible.”
As well as the fundraising evening, friends of the Hudson family have also got involved in other sponsored events.
Neil Walker, 42, who has known Craig for more than 30 years, completed a 93-mile sponsored bike ride from Manchester to Leeds, via Barnsley, raising more than £5,000. He and seven others, finished the ride in 11-and-a-half hours on August 7.
He said: “The next day was a bit painful but we wanted to support Craig as much as we could.”
Meanwhile, last Thursday another friend, Craig Richardson, organised a kick-a-thon with instructor Jaz Bhatt, from A-Class Martial Arts, at Whitcliffe Sports Centre.
The dozen participants raised £1,200 by completing 12,000 roundhouse kicks within one hour.
Tim Bennett also completed a five-mile sponsored swim at The Village, Tingley, on Friday.
On Sunday, Craig’s friends will undergo a gruelling body waxing session at the Mead Hall, in The George, Cleckheaton, from 1pm.
There will also be a children’s tombola.
