This morning Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court heard two cases brought by Bradford Council where drivers had been charged with unlawfully using a disabled person’s badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle.

Adam Kaji, 18, of Taylor Street, Batley, appeared in court to plead guilty to the charge.

Magistrates heard that on September 25 a Council warden spotted a vehicle with a blue badge parked in a disabled bay in Bradford city centre, near the University of Bradford. The badge belonged to a 78 year old who was in hospital at the time, but the registered keeper of the car was Kaji, a student who, when interviewed, said he was doing errands for his grandfather.

In another interview he said he was buying his grandfather breakfast.

He was fined £46 and ordered to pay £450 in costs and a £52 surcharge.

Mohammed Sheraz, 34, of St Augustines Terrace, was not in court, but pleaded guilty in his absence. On October 3 a warden saw his Vauxhall parked in a disabled bay on Piccadilly. Sheraz was spotted returning to the car, and admitted the blue badge holder was at home. He was given a £111 fine, ordered to pay £411 costs and a £32 surcharge.
