Crow Nest Park to come alive with a flaming lake of art

Arts organisation Creative Scene is hosting There Will Be Fire – 1,000 candles, 10 animated foundations and 21 floating water lilies will be aflame at the Dewsbury park from 5pm-8pm on Thursday.

A ‘spice tree’ will fill the air with the scent of cinnamon and cardamom while live, lakeside saxophone and harp music is played.

More than 2,000 visitors were pulled in for the event last year, and Holmfirth-based pa-BOOM were enlisted once again to transform the park.

Creative Scene producer Rebecca Legg said: “This year, pa-BOOM have been tasked with designing brand new fire elements andstructures designed specifically for the lake in Crow Nest Park.

“These will be brand new, never before seen elements that will truly transform the lake for a magical evening for all the family.

“Local people have been very involved in helping to make this a special event with over 100 local school children helping to create some of the artworks, as well as emerging artists from Batley School of Art and volunteers from Friends of Crow Nest Park lending a hand to make it all happen.”

Schools involved include Westmoor Junior School, Boothroyd Academy, St Paulinus Catholic Primary and Eastborough Junior and Infant School.

Batley School of Art student Bex Middleton along with alumni Salma Patel and Harriet Lawson have put together 100 paper lanterns for the event.

Fine art for design course leader Eve Gray said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Bex, Salma and Harriet to engage with their local community and be part of the Creative Scene team that strives to bring exciting art to the people that live in that community.

“Crow Nest Park is a beautiful venue and the perfect setting for such an exciting and visually magical event.”

Dewsbury Museum will be open to visitors and food such as pie and peas will be available from the newly re-opened Crow Nest Park Café on the night.

The free event is suitable for all ages. Car space is very limited, but on-street parking is available in Heckmondwike Road and Cemetery Road.
