Cuppa culture for Matthew
COFFEE lovers were queuing out of the door when Matthew’s Coffee House formally opened its new lounge and art gallery.
The coffee shop has opened its first floor space to customers, who can browse a raft of paintings and photographs created by local artists.
Spen MP Mike Wood, who opened the shop four years ago, was again on hand to perform the ribbon cutting duties in front of dozens of keen customers. The opening also coincided with Fairtrade Fortnight, which the cafe supports.
Owner Matthew Crowther said he hoped to alternate the artwork on offer every six weeks, so local artists have a space to display their latest works.
He said: “It’s been a big success and I was delighted so many people turned up. People were queuing at the door because they couldn’t get in. I sold the first piece – a photograph of Judy Woods by David Link – on the first day.”
