Developers silent on Mirfield supermarket rumours

A Kirklees planning chief has said the mystery supermarket development in Station Road, Mirfield is still on track, despite persistent rumours its supermarket backer has pulled out.

Developer St James Securities announced plans earlier this year to convert the old Veolia waterworks site into a new supermarket, and claimed “one of the big four” supermarkets – believed to be Asda – was interested in the project. But rumours have persisted on social media this week that the mystery backer has pulled out of the scheme, leaving the plans in jeopardy.

Council planning officer Jonathan Ainley said today (Wednesday): “I have contacted the agent earlier this week and as far as I know, they are still looking to progress the application as before.”

A spokesman from the firm representing St James Securities said they were unable to make any further comment at the moment.

According to plans released in May, The unnamed supermarket chain wants to build a 30,000 sq ft store on the old Veolia site off Station Road.

It would include 192 car parking spaces, a petrol station and a pick-up point for online orders.

The store itself would sell food items along with “a small area for clothing and some electrical”.
