Dewsbury care home inspection: Records showed resident had not been out of bed for a month

Treating people with respect and involving them in their care; providing care, treatment and support that meets people’s needs, and staffing all required improvement. The poor quality and suitability of management of the home led the CQC to take enforcement action.

The home had been without a manager for four months, but told inspectors they were recruiting.

All standards were being met regarding caring for people safely and protecting them from harm.

The report noted staff often referred to residents by room number and inspectors saw staff smoking outside the room of a resident on oxygen therapy.

It said people were not protected from the risks of inadequate nutrition and dehydration. Food charts were incomplete and some residents were losing weight.

“We saw that people were not served with mid-morning or mid-afternoon drinks. Staff told us they did not have time to do this,” the report read.

On the day of the inspection, 23 people were being nursed in bed with bed rails in place.

“Two of the people we spoke with told us they would like to get up but were not given that option,” it said.

“One person in bed told us ‘Oh I would love to get up, I get so lonely in here and my bottom hurts.’

“We saw daily records for a period of a month when the person had not been out of bed at all.”

“Our plans for Manorcroft include investing in advanced staff training, building nursing capacity to prevent residents requiring frequent hospital stays and updating the home to make the environment as comfortable and homely as possible.”
