Dewsbury Moor Crematorium reopens after £260k revamp

The £260,000 Kirklees Council project, which began in June, has seen various facilities at the crematorium on Heckmondwike Road improved.

The refurbishments include a new canopy at the front entrance, installation of a covered flower terrace, a renewed pathway leading to the Book of Remembrance and resurfacing of the main car park on the site.

Coun Cathy Scott, Cabinet member for Place, said: “I would like to thank the officers involved for their hard work on this project.

“The refurbishments to the crematorium have significantly improved its appearance and usability, making it a fitting place to say goodbye to loved ones.”

Further improvements include a Book of Remembrance cabinet, new waiting room windows and double exit doors at the rear, improvements to CCTV and upgraded fire and burglar alarms.

Coun Scott added: “Nobody wants to have to visit a crematorium, but the changes that have been made should make it as pleasant an experience as possible.”

A new mercury abatement plant – now required by crematoriums under Government legislation to reduce emissions – was also installed during the recent work.

Project member Richard Forster said: “The mercury plant is something people don’t see and you wouldn’t know it’s there, but it’s an important part of it and I’m pleased we’ve had it put in.”
