Drivers putting lives at risk on one-way street

Shop manager Dean Mitchell said drivers who ignored the no entry signs in Union Street and Bond Street were putting lives at risk.

Mr Mitchell said he had seen “seven or eight” cars in the last week alone speed down Bond Street towards Northgate.

He raised his concerns at a Dewsbury Chamber of Trade meeting on Monday. He said: “I can foresee an almighty accident happening outside my shop.”

Chamber of Trade president Trish Makepeace said: “Someone is going to get seriously hurt – it’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Mr Mitchell, manager of charity shop Sense, said: “If a silly driver tries to beat the lights at Corporation Street and there is a car coming down Bond Street there’s going to be an almighty bang. Or someone will end up with a car in their shop. I think highways need to re-evaluate that whole section.”

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “While it is a police matter to enforce moving traffic on the roads, as a council we are reviewing all the signing and lining on the streets this problem has been reported on, to make sure that driving instructions are clear and obvious.”
