Kieran Rouse, 25, was sent to prison for three-years, four months over the motiveless “unexplained” assault which left the victim needing 30 stitches to a head wound.

Leeds Crown Court heard the attack happened on April 6 this year as the victim was having building work done at his home on Slaithwaite Road, Thornhill.

Philip Adams, prosecuting, said the victim went into his garden to offer the workmen a cup of tea when he was attacked by Rouse.

Rouse hit the victim on the top of the head with a spade, knocking him to the ground. Rouse then struck him four of five times over the head before singing and laughing as he walked away. Rouse was seen walking casually along the street with the blood-stained shovel over his shoulder saying: “I’ve done it, I’ve done it!”

He then threatened to attack another man as he was sat in his garden nearby. Police were contacted and Rouse was found to be more then twice the drink-drive limit shortly after his arrest.

Rouse, of Briar Drive, Dewsbury, pleaded guilty inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon. Patrick Palmer, mitigating, said Rouse had pleaded guilty to the offences at an early opportunity, was sorry for what he had done and accepted he would be facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Mr Palmer said the attack could only be explained by the fact that he had been on an alcohol binge before the incident.

The Recorder of Leeds, judge Peter Collier, QC, said: “This was, I am satisfied, a completely isolated incident and was completely out of character and was caused by your binge drinking.”
