President of the Chamber, Trish Makepeace, said at their meeting last night (Monday) that since the news broke, retailers had noticed that the town centre seemed quieter.

Six men pleaded guilty to planning a terror attack on an English Defence League (EDL) rally in the town at the end of last month.

Mrs Makepeace said: “It’s gone quiet since then. I’m sure trade has dropped again.”

She added that although the bombers were not from Dewsbury, the plot contributed to a negative image of the town.

The town centre took another hit last week as cosmetics chain Superdrug announced that they would not be renewing the lease on their shop when it expires next month.

“The travellers are also putting people off from coming to the town,” she added.
