birkenshaw children are flying the flag for the environment.
Teachers and pupils at Birkenshaw Middle School have been striving hard to attain the Eco Schools award, and were delighted to receive it just before the end of the school year.
Dr Esther Moriarty, PSE co-ordinator, said: “It was quite a long process, co-ordinated by our deputy head Anna De Quesnay. We set up an eco-schools committee with children and staff and had an eco-warriors scheme.
“We ran events throughout the year, such as a ‘switch-off fortnight’ where we made a conscious effort to use less electricity. At the end we did a comparison to see how much we’d saved – and there was a big difference.
“Green bins were placed in classrooms for re-cycling and we got extra bins for the grounds and the children helped the caretaker with litter picking.”
