New development would hit our services

A POSSIBLE expansion of a Bradford estate could have an “immense” impact on Birkenshaw and East Bierley, according to councillors.

Bradford Council is currently consulting on its Local Development Framework (LDF) which earmarks green belt land off the Holme Wood estate, behind Tong Street and Westgate, as suitable for developing up to 2,700 new homes over the next 15 years.

Two thirds of any new houses at the site would have a huge impact on North Kirklees.

Speaking at the Birstall and Birkenshaw Ward Forum, Coun Robert Light (Con, Birstall and Birkenshaw) said if the LDF was approved it would have a massive affect on our services.

He said: “It’s a large chunk of land, and we are concerned about the impact any development will have on Kirklees, damaging our services and our roads, particularly Wakefield Road, Tong Street and Westgate Hill.

“The potential impact on our schools and all sorts of services is quite considerable, particularly in Birkenshaw and East Bierley.”

Coun Light said a service road to a new development, which is currently agricultural land, would come from near the Shell Garage in Tong Street.

“It’s an immense area of potential development,” he added.
