A former Heckmondwike couple are celebrating 65 years of marriage.
Eric and Jean Hudson, who now live in Bridlington, marked their blue sapphire anniversary on July 24.
Eric 87, was born in Leeds, and met Heckmondwike-born Jean, 87, at a dance at the Mecca in Leeds.
He said: “Jean’s father was well known in Heckmondwike – he was called George Arthur Fisher, and he sold poultry and fruit in the town.
“We got married at Heckmondwike Parish Church; it was a glorious sunny day. The next day we went to Blackpool for the day and took Jean’s mother!” The couple moved to their own house in Heckmondwike, and Eric got a job as a superintendent at Vickers Dawson in Gomersal.
He said: “We used to have a caravan in Bridlington and then we started doing military weekends.
“We knew a lot of people in Heckmondwike but we knew more in Bridlington so we decided to move here 10 years ago.”
The couple celebrated their anniversary with a romantic meal on Tuesday and also a party with friends.
Eric added: “People don’t believe you when you tell them you’ve been married for 65 years.
“To stay married for so long you need a lot of patience!”
