Thieves have stolen more than 60 exotic birds worth £5,000 from a Wyke pet shop.
The birds, which included canaries, cockatiels, love birds, diamond doves and a baby African grey parrot were taken from Newlyn Pets in Whitehall Road, Wyke, on Monday at about 10pm.
Owner Brian Cartwright had only bought the parrot two days earlier.
He said: “My dog was going barmy so I opened the door and he ran to the shed at the back. By the time I got there they had been in and taken about 60 birds.
“I had only had the parrot two days – it was only a baby.
“I am gutted. The same thing happened in June – we also sell fish and somebody stole lots of them.
“The sale of the birds would have kept me going through the winter. It is hard work keeping the business going – I will carry on but it’s worrying.”
Police are investigating the theft. Anyone with information should contact PC 4642 Stead at Spen Valley NPT on the non-emergency number 101.
