IT’S not every church that gives out the football scores alongside the hymn numbers, but at Hartshead, Hightown, Roberttown and Scholes, the weekly football scores are watched with great anticipation.
“I have run a fantasy football competition within my family for about 10 years now, and it seemed a great idea to run one in the four parishes,” said the Rev Richard Burge.
“We ran our first fantasy football league last season and had just under 70 teams entered.”
The winner of last year’s competition was Jean Smith, who ran out a clear winner when Manchester City won the Premiership trophy.
“Each person who enters picks six teams out of the English Leagues and then gets points for goals, and the results the teams come up with over the season. It is very simple and is just a good bit of fun!” added Mr Burge.
There was also a Euro 2012 Fantasy Competition and even a Fantasy Strictly Come Dancing competition too in the four churches.
“I have been amazed at the variety of people who have joined in the league,” said Mr Burge.
“People who had no idea about football have been having a go and often it is those with the lucky guesses who do quite well!”
