Festivities for VE Day anniversary

Sir Winston Churchill announced a “brief period of rejoicing” as the horrors and heroism of WWII came to an end almost 70 years ago.

And to commemorate the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which marked the official surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied Forces, events will be held across the district from May 8-10.

Churchill’s broadcast was relayed from loud speakers at the town halls in Kirklees as flags and bunting lined the street parties and victory bonfires that sparked up.
