Fire in Dewsbury flats

Residents of a block of flats were evacuated yesterday afternoon after a blaze engulfed the complex.

Fire crews from Dewsbury, Mirfield and Batley were called out at a communal block of flats in Ashworth Close Dewsbury at 3.39pm.

An eyewitness said the building and communal stairwells were thick smoke, and the fire had reached the roof void and spread to adjoining properties.

Five pumps and an aerial platform attended and residents were led to safety. Fire crews battled for more than two hours to bring the blaze under control.

The brigade handed over the scene to police shortly before 7am today.
