Fire ripped through old bowling club building

Firefighters tackled the blaze at the old Cleckheaton Bowling Club between Park View and Waltroyd Road at around 3am on Sunday morning.

The hut had been derelict for a number of years. An investigation is underway to find out how the fire started.

Firefighter Nigel Godsman said: “It was an extremely windy night, so that caused a few problems.

“The wind was just blowing the fire straight through the building.”

Mr Godsman said about 80 per cent of the building was affected and it will probably be demolished.

Staff from Cleckheaton Fire Station used four pumps and aerial equipment to get things under control in around 30 minutes, then checked on the site at 8am.

The council have since taken control of the building and boarded it up, Mr Godsman said.
