Foodies going Proper Nutty over Dewsbury’s latest export

Peanut butter-makers Proper Nutty, based in the Bretton Street Enterprise Centre, appeared at the BBC’s three-day Good Food Show in Birmingham and sold every jar.

The business’ owner, Stuart Franklin, said he didn’t expect it to be so popular.

“We couldn’t believe how busy we were,” he said.

“We had to drive back to Dewsbury on the first night to re-stock for the weekend. There was huge interest in the product at the show.

“We were most proud to represent Yorkshire in this way, a region known for its delicious artisan produce.”

The firm was given a stall at the event, attended by celebrity chefs and thousands of food lovers, to promote its products at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham two weeks ago.

Proper Nutty boasts two different jars of peanut butter – Nowt But Nuts with 100 per cent peanuts and Slightly Salted, which has sea salt added to the nuts.

The brand has been on sale in more than 60 shops across the country and overseas in Belgium.

Mr Franklin and his wife, Kathryn, started the business when they moved back to Dewsbury after a stint living in New Zealand.

Mr Franklin said: “There was a lot of trial and error at the beginning to get a product we were happy with.

“We feel that we have produced a peanut butter with a unique texture that we like to call ‘smunchy’ – it’s a little bit smooth and a little bit crunchy.”
