Women who attended Batley’s former Princess Royal Girls School are poised for a reunion this weekend.
Former pupils are invited to an informal get-together at the Union Rooms pub on Hick Lane on Saturday, May 13.
The school opened as Carlinghow Senior Girls School in the 1930s but closed roughly 40 years ago.
Despite the long time that has passed since the school’s closure, one former student has helped students stay in touch.
Janet Singleton created a Facebook group for fellow ex-pupils five years ago.
Despite acknowledging the fact that she had her work cut out, Janet was persistent and today the group’s membership stands at over 250.
The group attempt to meet at least once a year, with the women sharing tales of yesteryear.
“I first started the Facebook group in 2012,” said Janet, who now lives in North Shields but still makes the journey back to Kirklees for the meet-ups.
“Back then I’d not seen anyone from school so it needed a long time before it picked up and the group really started going.
“But I stuck with it and now we have over 250 members.
“When you think that the school closed over 40 years ago that’s not too bad.
“We try and meet up at least once a year and depending on who can and can’t make it, we tend to get around 40-45 people. When we held the first event I’d not seen these girls for 45 years so it was very, very strange.
“But when we got talking it was like I had seen them just yesterday.”
The event takes place from 2pm onwards. For more, e-mail Janet on email@example.com.
